Your Donations Help!
The work that our club does in our community is made possible by donations of money, manpower and materials from that community. We’re able to make the deep sky accessible to the public due to the support of members and the public.
The Sunshine Coast Astronomy Club is the Sunshine Coast Centre of the Royal Astronomical Society of Canada and is a charity registered with the Canada Revenue Agency and eligible to issue official donation receipts.
Our Charitable Registration Number is 84283 2277 RR 0001. Further information about our charitable status is available at the CRA website.
Prospective donors can e mail us or speak to any member of the executive at a regular club meeting for further information on the specifics of making a donation (see the About Uspages for details).
Please make cheques payable to the Sunshine Coast Astronomy Club.
Gift Acceptance Policy
Acceptance of any contribution, gift or grant is at the discretion of the Board of the Sunshine Coast Astronomy Club. They will not accept any gift unless it can be used for the stated purposes and mission of the Club.
The Club prefers donations of cash or publicly traded securities that can be immediately traded for cash because of the simplicity of managing cash and evaluating its worth.
Other gifts, such as real property, personal property, in-kind gifts, non-liquid securities, and contributions whose sources are not transparent or whose use is restricted in some manner, will require special review prior to acceptance, due to the obligations they may raise or liabilities they may pose for the Club.
The Sunshine Coast Astronomy Club will provide charitable receipts on request for gifts meeting Canada Revenue requirements. Cash and publicly traded securities that can be immediately traded for cash will be assessed at face value. Goods and services purchased for Club projects and programs as authorized by the Board will be assessed at the value of the receipts submitted by the donor. Other gifts will require an independent assessment of the value of the gift from a person with the proper qualifications. (The National Fundraising Committee of the Royal Astronomical Society of Canada has a list of qualified assessors.)
The Sunshine Coast Astronomy Club will respect the intent of a donor requesting anonymity by restricting information about the donor to those Board members with a need to know.
Donors may wish to restrict the use of their gift to a specific project in progress or planned by the Club. The Club will endeavour to use the gift as intended. However if the project is cancelled or an urgent priority emerges, the Club reserves the right to use the gift as they see fit.
No gift will be accepted if under any reasonable set of circumstances the gift would jeopardize the donor’s financial security.
The Sunshine Coast Astronomy Club will not provide financial or tax advice about donations and will encourage donors to seek guidance from their own professional advisors to assist them in the process of making their decision.
The Sunshine Coast Astronomy Club will not compensate any third party for directing a gift or a donor to the Club.
On March 26, 2016 the Board of Directors of the Sunshine Coast Astronomy Club adopted this Gift Acceptance Policy
